Celina Jiya Jaitley was born at Simla, India, on 9th June in 1981 to Punjabi-speaking Indian Army Colonel VK Jaitley and Meeta, an Afghan beauty queen-cum-psychologist, specializing in children's problems. Celina has a brother who is also in the Indian Army.

She wanted to grow up and join the army as well as her father, either as a pilot or doctor. .Most of her childhood was spent in different places because her father being transferred in cities and towns all over India - as a result she finished her studies in over a dozen different schools. The family has now settled in Kolkata.

Instead of being a pilot or a doctor she got degree in commerce and then took a job at a telephone company.

Celina suddenly famous when she won a local beauty contest, and encouraged to put her photo and profile of the organizers of the Miss India contest, was to be included in the competition and went to be crowned Miss India in 2001. Then she went to represent India in the Miss Universe competition , and finally stood in the fourth place of 79 participants.
